Changing the oil removes the contaminated lubricant, but it may also mean disposing of oil that still has useful service life. In one Trico case study, purchased gear oil was filtered with a high-viscosity handheld system. The results below apply to that documented sample and filtration sequence.
ISO cleanliness code 20/19/15 with a wear particle concentration rating of 7.8, classified as marginal.
After two hours of filtration, the oil measured ISO 18/17/14 with a wear particle concentration rating of 7.3, classified as normal.
After an additional two hours of filtration, the oil measured ISO 17/16/14 with a wear particle concentration rating of 3.3, classified as normal.
Trico reported only trace quantities of debris in the final sample, with no signs of steel or nonferrous debris observed.
